Knowing approximately how much each animal weighs can make various tasks easier on a farm. The good news is that there are now Android apps that can help with this task.

Some tools use the bovine's body measurements, while others take advantage of the smartphone's camera and artificial intelligence capabilities.

See below how this technology works and discover apps that can be installed directly through Google Play.

The app doesn't turn your phone into a scale. In reality, it uses other information to produce an estimate.

There is a relationship between certain body measurements and a bovine's weight. Using specific formulas, it is possible to arrive at an approximate result.

There are also technologies that attempt to estimate these characteristics through the analysis of photographs.

One of the available alternatives for Android is Animal Weight – Pigs and Cattle.

The app's goal is to make it easier to calculate approximate weight using measurements provided by the user.

After measuring the animal, simply enter the requested values for the app to perform the calculation.

Download Animal Weight on Google Play

O Cattle Weight AI It uses a different approach.

The app uses artificial intelligence to analyze a photograph of the cattle and generate a weight estimate.

This proposal may be interesting for those who want to try a more automated way of performing the analysis using their smartphone's camera.

Download Cattle Weight AI on Google Play

If you are using a measurement-based application, you will typically need:

For an image-based solution, the primary resource will be the phone's own camera.

Monitoring weight helps the producer observe the herd's development.

If estimates are made regularly, it is possible to compare the values and see how the animals are evolving over time.

This information can be used in conjunction with other property data to assist in organizing management.

One of the most interesting ways to use this type of app is to create a monitoring routine.

The producer can conduct a new evaluation after a certain period and compare the result with the previous record.

Over time, this generates a history that makes it easier to visualize the evolution of animals.

The quality of the estimate depends directly on the quality of the information provided.

If a measurement is incorrect, the application will perform the calculation using that value and consequently may present a different result than expected.

Therefore, take your time measuring and keep the tape measure correctly positioned.

In the case of applications that use artificial intelligence, image quality can also influence the analysis.

Try to keep the animal completely visible, avoid very dark photographs, and follow the positioning instructions provided by the app.

If the result appears very different from what was expected, a new photograph can be used for comparison.

When in doubt, a simple strategy is to perform the same assessment more than once.

Similar values may indicate greater consistency in the procedure.

If there is a significant difference, double-check the measurements, the animal's positioning, or the photograph used.

Obtaining a single estimate can be helpful, but tracking the results over time can offer even more interesting insights.

Note down information such as:

One way to evaluate how well the method works is to compare some results with a scale.

Make an estimate using the app and, when you have access to the appropriate equipment, weigh the same animal.

Then compare the two values.

This procedure helps to better understand the difference between the app's estimate and the actual weight observed on the property.

Option based on body measurements:

Install Animal Weight – Pigs and Cattle

Option based on photography and artificial intelligence:

Install Cattle Weight AI

One of the main advantages is the speed.

When the goal is to roughly track an animal's progress, using a cell phone can be a practical alternative for obtaining a reference point without immediately depending on a full weighing facility.

Despite its convenience, it is essential to differentiate between estimated weight and actual weight.

The application's result is an approximation obtained through the information provided or analyzed.

When it is necessary to know the exact weight of the bovine, appropriate weighing equipment should be used.

Those who wish to use a measuring tape and enter the data manually can start by Animal Weight – Pigs and Cattle.

Cattle Weight AI
